Tomb of Truong Co

On the bank of the Tả Trạch River, in the deep green forest of the Hue mountains, a cluster of tombs has lain still for hundreds of years. This is the Trường Cơ tomb. Lord Tiên Nguyễn Hoàng rests here, the man who dared to head south and open a new land.

Nguyễn Hoàng was the first lord to enter Thuận Hóa as its governor. That began the settling of Đàng Trong, the southern realm ruled by the Nguyễn lords in the 17th and 18th centuries. He laid the foundation of a land that later stretched from the Đèo Ngang pass to the far south. The tomb named Trường Cơ is where he was buried, and it keeps the mark of the man who began it all.

Trường Cơ is not the only tomb here. Nine tombs of the Nguyễn lords stand next to one another along the Tả Trạch. Each has its own name. There are Trường Cơ and Trường Diên. There are Trường Thái and Trường Thiệu. Trường Phong and Trường Thanh follow, with others besides. They lie under the trees like pages of history lying silent.

What sets this place apart is not grandeur or splendor. It is the stillness. There is no loud noise, only wind coming off the river and the rustle of forest leaves. Standing here, you feel a silence in which history is still plainly present.

Hundreds of years ago, soldiers, officials and ordinary people carried the lords' coffins to this spot in the mountain forest beside the river. They chose a place with clear water, dense forest and good earth, as the old belief in feng shui advised. The tombs are still there today. They are still cared for, and incense is still burned whenever a death anniversary comes round.

From the bank of the Tả Trạch, looking toward the tombs shaded by trees, it is easy to see why the people of Hue keep these places with such special respect. These are more than graves. The Nguyễn family shaped the history of Vietnam over centuries, and here, beside a green river among quiet trees, is where its story began.
